Powder gets specified for the hard places (the yard, the van, the plant room, the unheated store) and those are exactly the places an engineer's annual visit costs you most to arrange. A P50 is commissioned once, checked in-house by whoever is already on site, and covered for a decade.

Why Buy A P50 Dry Powder Extinguisher?

Powder extinguishers are commonly selected where a broad range of fire risks need to be considered.

The P50 powder range is designed around ABC powder protection, with the P50P6 offering a 43A/233B fire rating and protection against Class A, B and C fires.

The P50 also takes a different approach to ongoing extinguisher maintenance. Britannia states that the range allows businesses to carry out their own annual maintenance inspection, with the design intended to reduce costs over its 20-year lifecycle.

Key P50 benefits include:

  • British manufactured
  • Lightweight composite construction
  • 20-year lifecycle
  • Annual maintenance inspection
  • No external service required
  • 10-year guarantee
  • BSI Kitemark and UKCA certification
  • Available in different capacities

Where powder belongs · BS 5306-8

Powder is not normally the right answer indoors.BS 5306-8 advises that discharging a powder extinguisher inside a building can cause a sudden loss of visibility and can impair breathing, which may jeopardise escape, rescue or other emergency action, and that powder should generally not be specified for indoor use unless a health and safety risk assessment supports it.

That isn't a fault in the product, it's what powder is for. Its home is external and semi-enclosed: vehicles, plant and machinery, forecourts, LPG and gas storage, workshops, construction sites, agricultural buildings and unheated stores. For cover inside occupied buildings, the PFAS-free foam range or the water mist range is usually the correct specification. We'll tell you which you need at survey, including when that means selling you less.

Two independent pressure indicators, verified in seconds with the testing magnet stored in the base. Needle returns to green. The unit is live.

02 · Cylinder

HDPE wound in Kevlar®

An HDPE core wrapped in aramid yarn with a UV-protected outer casing. It can't corrode or dent, at 55 bar minimum burst pressure on a 12 bar working charge, which is what lets it live on a vehicle or in a yard.

03 · Charge

ABC 40 dry powder

Mono-ammonium phosphate with ammonium sulphate. On Class A it fuses and swells into a crust that seals the fuel from oxygen and stops re-ignition; on Class B it breaks the chemical chain reaction in the flame itself. Non-conductive either way.

Step 03

Run the magnet test

Wipe the unit down, take the testing magnet from the base and pass it across each indicator. The needle should move, then return to green.

Where Can You Use A P50 Powder Extinguisher?

P50 powder extinguishers can be suitable for premises where Class A, B and C fire risks are present, subject to the appropriate fire risk assessment and product selection.

They can be considered for environments including workshops, warehouses, commercial premises, industrial locations and other areas where flammable liquids or gases may be present. The right extinguisher should always be selected according to the actual fire risks within your premises.

01

Workshops

Two workers welding and metalworking in a busy indoor workshop

Workshop environments often present a mix of combustible materials and flammable liquid risk suited to ABC powder cover.

02

Warehouses

A long warehouse aisle lined with stacked cardboard boxes

Powder can be considered where stored goods, plant and external risk are present, subject to a fire risk assessment.

03

Commercial Premises

A delivery truck pulling out of a covered loading dock at a commercial unit

Suitable for external and semi-enclosed commercial areas where the appropriate product has been selected for the site.

04

Industrial Locations

Fuel storage tanks and pipework on an industrial site

Industrial sites with flammable liquid or gas risk are a common application for the P50 powder range.

05

Vehicles & Plant

Agricultural sprayers and site machinery standing in an industrial yard

Vans, HGVs, tractors and site machinery, where the risk travels with the vehicle rather than staying inside a building. What each one needs depends on its load as much as the vehicle itself, so the assessment comes first.

01Can I use ABC powder extinguishers indoors?
Generally not, without justification. BS 5306-8 advises that a powder discharge inside a building can cause a sudden loss of visibility and can impair breathing, which may jeopardise escape, rescue or other emergency action, and that powder should not normally be specified for indoor use unless a health and safety risk assessment supports it. Powder belongs outdoors and in semi-enclosed spaces: vehicles, plant, forecourts, workshops, sites and gas storage. For inside occupied buildings, foam or water mist is usually the right specification, and we'll say so at survey.
02Which one do I need: P50P2, P50P6, P50P9 or P50-MO9?
The P50P2 2kg is the vehicle unit at 2.74kg fully charged, rated 13A 55B and supplied with a transport bracket. The P50P6 6kg is the general-purpose choice at 43A 233B with a 5m+ range: workshops, garages, forecourts, external plant. The P50P9 9kg is rated 55A 233B, the highest Class A rating in the powder range, for construction sites and larger industrial risk. The P50-MO9 9kg is a further capacity option within the range for suitable applications. Get in touch and we'll confirm the right fit for your fire risk assessment.
03What does powder cover that foam and water mist don't?
Class C: flammable gas, so propane, butane and LPG. Neither foam nor water mist carries a Class C rating at all. Powder also works down to −20°C where both of those ranges are rated only to +5°C, which is why it's the practical answer for unheated stores, external plant, vehicles and winter site work.
04How does ABC powder put a fire out?
ABC 40 powder is mono-ammonium phosphate combined with ammonium sulphate. On a Class A fire the particles fuse and swell into a barrier across the fuel that shuts out oxygen and prevents re-ignition. On a Class B fire it interferes with the chemical reaction sustaining the flame, so the flame simply stops. The powder is non-conductive throughout.
05Do they need an annual engineer service?
No service contract is required. Each is designed for a simple in-house annual inspection by your own staff: indicators, tamper seal, date stud, logbook. We supply the written procedure and logbook at commissioning, which matters more than usual on powder, since these units are often spread across vehicles and sites an engineer would otherwise have to drive between.
06Are they British made?
100%. Britannia Fire designs and manufactures the range in Norfolk, England: each cylinder wound, charged and tested before it leaves the factory. Buying the P50 range supports British manufacturing.
07Do you deliver and install across the UK?
Yes. Delivery across the UK, with siting, vehicle mounting and commissioning available nationwide. Site surveys are free and without obligation.
